Race Director thoughts!!!
The 24th(?) annual race is in the books. The race started as the Oleksak Lumber Spring Marathon as a tune up race for Boston has changed dates and seasons. Now known as the Westfield Half is now a summer race and we have also added a 5K, 10K and Kids Run cause just putting on a Half Marathon wasn’t enough fun 😉
After a weather, lightening, scare the day turned out OK. The first hour featured oppressive humidity then a small system blew through and it cooled a little and blew over our homemade finish line ;-( It was our first time using Amelia Garden for the post race party. The Boys & Girls Club staff did an excellent job cooking up cheeseburgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs and some really tasty tortellini salad. The ice cold beer was also a hit as was the Italian Ice. I really enjoyed seeing lots of families there. It seemed everyone had a nice time because nobody seemed in a hurry to leave, I thought I might have to announce a ‘Last Call’ 😉 Gary our DJ did a rockin’ job with music, and the extra timing mat at the finish provided him with all finisher info so he could call out everyone’s name as the crossed the line.
The following groups boosted our numbers and accomplished some pretty tough goals. The ‘Couch to 5K’ from the local YMCA, ‘Fleet Feet from Longmeadow’ and the ‘Run Your Health’ group provided lots of excitement as members of each group finished. At one point I managed to have a beer and cheeseburger while I watched finishers crossing the line. So awesome to see people accomplish goals that just months ago seemed unreachable.
I have to thank all our wonderful volunteers, the Westfield Police Dept, Emergency Radio operators, Westfield Fire dept who provided a large flag hung from their spiffy new ladder truck, the Medical staff who treated 13 dehydrated runners and also the staff of the Boys and Girls Club who do so much for the community here in Westfield. And finally thanks to all the runners who accomplished goals while helping fund the great programs for hundreds of kids at the BGC. Every penny of the profits go to the Boys and Girls Club. Win. Win.
